The Veycross File — Cold-Case Name-Elimination Mystery

Ten years later, the paper trail has something new to say.

A freshly scanned scene negative reopens a fictional 2016 murder. A submission packet has lost its identity label, but pieces of the original intake record remain. Follow them through thirty-six hundred names to find the contributor whose details fit.

A case to settle into

For puzzlers drawn to old files, overlooked details and methodical elimination. The Veycross File pairs a cold-case atmosphere with a clear row-by-row task: inspect the clues, consult the record keys and cross out the entries that cannot belong.

• 3,600 unique suspect names and 17 clues.
• Three 109-page puzzle PDFs: US Letter, A4 and a linked tablet edition. Each contains the same case; choose one format.
• A separate 8-page Solution PDF with optional hints, progress counts and the ending.
• A fictional case file, material-group and receiving-site references, six pages of worked clue examples, a log index, a progress tally and notes space.

How you solve it

1. Read the case and the key to the records.
2. Apply the clues and cross out entries that break a rule. Position clues refer to the original rows, even after those rows are crossed out.
3. Check the one remaining name against the separate Solution file when you are ready.

Time and format

Plan for approximately 4–6½ hours of active checking across as many sittings as you like. This range is calculated from the suggested sequence of row checks, not timed player testing. Reading, note-taking and finding neighboring rows add time.

Print the Letter or A4 edition in black and white, or mark the linked tablet PDF in a compatible annotation app. Bookmark your current register page before jumping to an example. PDF links and pen modes depend on your app; marking and checking are manual.
