The Ultimate Etsy Listing Optimization Checklist
I review a lot of Etsy listings, and the same problems show up over and over. Missing tags, weak titles, not enough photos, prices that leave zero margin.
This checklist covers everything. Run through it for every new listing, and audit your existing listings against it quarterly.
Title Checklist
- [ ] Uses the full 140 characters (or close to it)
- [ ] Most important keywords are in the first 40 characters
- [ ] Describes the product, not the feeling (buyers search for "gold hoop earrings," not "stunning accessory")
- [ ] Includes 2-3 long-tail keyword phrases separated by commas or dashes
- [ ] No unnecessary filler words ("beautiful," "amazing," "high quality")
- [ ] Readable by a human, not just keyword-stuffed
A good title reads naturally while being packed with search terms. "Personalized Dog Portrait, Custom Pet Painting from Photo, Dog Lover Gift, Pet Memorial Art" hits 4 keyword phrases and reads like a description.
Tags Checklist
- [ ] All 13 tag slots are filled
- [ ] Tags are multi-word phrases (2-4 words each)
- [ ] No single-word tags
- [ ] No repeated words across tags
- [ ] Tags don't duplicate words from the title
- [ ] Mix of broad (3-4 tags) and specific long-tail (9-10 tags)
- [ ] Tags match buyer search intent, not product features
Use the Tag Analyzer to see what tags top sellers in your niche use. The Listing Audit checks your tag count and flags common issues.
Photos Checklist
- [ ] All 10 photo slots are used
- [ ] First photo is a clean hero shot on simple background
- [ ] At least 2 lifestyle/context photos
- [ ] At least 1 detail close-up
- [ ] At least 1 size reference photo
- [ ] Consistent style across all photos
- [ ] Bright, natural lighting (no flash)
- [ ] No blurry or pixelated images
- [ ] Mockups look realistic (for digital products)
Check the Color Trends for your niche to match the visual style that buyers expect.
Pricing Checklist
- [ ] Price covers materials + labor + packaging + shipping + Etsy fees (~15%)
- [ ] Accounted for potential offsite ads fee (15% for shops under $10K/year)
- [ ] Checked competitive pricing with the Price Analyzer
- [ ] Price is within or above the niche sweet spot
- [ ] Free shipping cost is built into product price (if offering free shipping)
- [ ] Leaves at least 30% gross margin after all costs
Description Checklist
- [ ] First sentence describes what the product IS (shows in search preview)
- [ ] Includes all measurements/dimensions
- [ ] Lists materials
- [ ] Explains care instructions
- [ ] Mentions what's included (especially for bundles)
- [ ] Processing time and shipping info
- [ ] Any customization instructions
Category & Attributes Checklist
- [ ] Most specific category selected
- [ ] All available attributes filled out (material, color, size, etc.)
- [ ] Correct "Who made it" selection (you, a member of your team, or another company)
- [ ] Correct "What is it" selection (finished product, supply, or tool)
- [ ] Correct "When did you make it" selection
- [ ] Digital/physical type correctly set
Before You Publish
Run the listing URL through the Listing Audit tool. It grades your listing A through F across title optimization, tag usage, image count, description quality, and engagement potential. Fix anything graded C or below before publishing.
Quarterly Audit
Every 3 months, check your top 10 listings:
1. Run each through the Listing Audit 2. Check keyword competitiveness in the Keyword Explorer — has your niche gotten more crowded? 3. Review tag strategy with the Tag Analyzer — are top sellers using different tags now? 4. Check pricing with the Price Analyzer — has the market shifted?
Consistent optimization beats one-time optimization every time. The sellers who audit and adjust regularly are the ones who maintain their ranking through market changes.
